June is just around the corner and we are preparing for our busy season. It is the traditional month for weddings, of course, but June is also graduation season. A good senior portrait captures the joy and excitement of leaving childhood behind and becomes a family treasure. With this in mind, I was thrilled  to take on Bill Higley’s downtown Erie senior portrait session.

Bill is currently a senior at Fairview High School, located about 12 miles from the center of Erie.  There is always something going on at the Home of the Tigers, and Bill has been in the middle of the action for the last four years. Now his sights are set on Pennsylvania State University Behrend, where he will start in the fall. Once there, his plan is to major in engineering.

We started off this downtown Erie senior portrait session at the Erie Art Museum, using the building’s classical columns to capture an academic vibe. Bill showed up in a dapper navy blue suit, a small shout-out to Penn State’s school colors. Bill and I had fun trying out different poses. But whether looking serious or relaxed, Bill projected who he is: an intelligent and stylish young man. This guy has game!

The second half of our session took place in Perry Square. Bill chose to wear a black camouflage t-shirt with a tiger design as a nod to his high school mascot. He also posed for a series of photos with his Mom. It was great to see how proud she was of him — and with good reason. But it was also wonderful to record the affection they have for each other. When Bill posed with his mother, he was as comfortable as when he was on the steps of the Erie Museum. A young man with that much poise will clearly go far.

Remembering the drab yearbook snapshots from my high school days, I’m really glad Bill and his mother took the time to find me. One of those stilted headshots against an artificial background would not have done justice to Bill. It was an honor to photograph him at this important turning point in his life. We wish hime the best as he begins the next chapter in his life.

If you are graduating, please get in touch so we can discuss how to record this important passage in your life.
